| From
Music Club to Public Library . . . |
The Cameron Public Library was started by a group of local women
who started a "music club" in 1955. The "music club"
wanted to be more useful to the community, so they later became
the "library club." The Library shelved its first donated
books in the building that is now Cameron Auto Body. The Library
shared space with the Village Hall, the Police Department, and the
Fire Department. In the early 70's the Library moved to its current
location. The Library was initially operated by a staff of volunteers,
until Gerald Degerstedt became the Library's first paid librarian.
In October 1962, Lydia Albrecht took on the job for five years.
In 1967, the village hired Marian Hover, who worked at the Library
for 15 years. Judy Engelbrecht assumed the post from 1982-1991.
In 1991 Patricia Becker accepted the job. She is a second-generation librarian;
she is the daughter of Marian Hover. The current librarian is Mary Shearer. Ms
Shearer took over in 2002. |
