We provide our county libraries with money to purchase new books and videos

We maintain a collection of leased books and books on tape in order to shorten the waiting lists for our most popular materials

We purchase large-print and western books

We plan and coordinate fundraising activities

We offer training sessions and workshops

We provide assistance to the libraries in cataloging their materials and weeding their collection

We offer librarian workshops and training

We maintain a computer system for a group of libraries called BCLIC. The computer system links these libraries in Barron and Rusk Counties of Wisconsin. Now when patrons look at the library catalog in any of the libraries, they can see the materials available in all of them. The can check out and return books at any of the libraries in BCLIC. This combined library catalog contains listings for over 250,000 books, videos, tapes and CDs. It is also available through the Internet.

Barron County Library Service History . . .

The Barron County Library Service was established on September 9, 1959. Librarians, library board members and members of the County Library Committee, recognizing the need for more books and expanded information services in Barron County, worked with the Rice Lake Public Library to create the service. In 1959 there were libraries or library stations in Rice Lake, Barron, Cumberland, Chetek, and Cameron. By 1981, there were also library stations in Dallas, Turtle Lake, and Prairie Farm.

In 1999, Barron County Library Service assisted the Barron and Rusk County libraries in raising funds and implementing a shared computer system to circulate and process their materials.
