The Good and Evil Island Adventure
By Faith

Once upon a time, a very long time ago, there loved a princess named Ann. She was very thoughtful and kind, but was quite shy. She lived on the Good Island, which was very close to the Evil Island. Lydia, the wicked witch, who was known for being mischievous, clever, and cruel, had the island all to herself.

Meanwhile, at the castle in the Island of Good, Ann and her family were trying to decide how they could gain control of the Evil Island. They really hadn't thought of any brilliant plans yet. Ann had been thinking quietly to herself, when she got an idea, so she thought she would suggest it.  "Mother, Father, I have an idea, " she said.

Her father nodded his head and said,  "All right, lets hear it. "

"Why don't we make a bargain with Lydia? " she asked.  "I could go and see of there is anything she would like to have in exchange for the Evil Island. If it works, then maybe she could help rule as well. Or at least have a say in things. "

 "It's a very nice idea darling, but… "

" I know it's dangerous, but I could do it! " protested Ann. The king and queen talked it over. Finally Ann's father said  "Oh all right. But you must bring Mr. Zenar and five guards with you. You can go as soon as you are done with your lessons. " So it was decided.

Later that day, as soon as Ann had convinced Mr. Zenar to go, they got into a boat and cautiously rowed over to the Evil Island. They walked up to the castle door and knocked. The door opened and there stood Lydia with those gleaming green eyes.  "Hello pet! she cackled. Ann was quite scared because nobody knew what Lydia could do next, but she decided there was really nothing to worry about.  "I have come to discuss a few issues with you, Lydia, " she said firmly and was quite surprised how her shy voice sounded.

"Come in, come in, " Lydia said slyly.

"I have come to talk to you about the Evil Island… " Ann started out with as she sat down in a really dusty chair. Mr. Zenar and Ann had thought up a speech during lessons. It went very smoothly. They finally decided to tutor Lydia for one month (she wasn't a great scholar and decided it was time to sit down and really learn something) and then she would decide if she would give up the Evil Island.

As the days went on, Ann and Mr. Zenar went to Evil Island and taught Lydia all about Greek myths, how to read and write their language (Latin), how to make fun science experiments (Lydia was starting to like them even more than her secret potions!), and how to measure. Ann was beginning to grow out of her shyness. Mr. Zenar was starting to have fun. But most of all, Lydia was really enjoying herself. The evil gleaming eyes of hers weren't so evil anymore.

Finally it was the last night of the month. Ann and Mr. Zenar were teaching Lydia how to be polite in public.  "Tonight's the night of the ball, Lydia, " Ann said slowly.  "You will announce if you are going to give up the Evil Island, " Lydia nodded.
"Well, lessons are over then! " Mr. Zenar said cheerfully.  "Ta ta! " And he and Ann left.

It was finally time for Lydia to make her decision. Everyone was seated at the Good Island dining room and all eyes were on Lydia. She looked over at Ann who was smiling nervously.  "To begin, " Lydia began.  "I'd like to tell you all a little story. When I was a little girl, my parents who were witches, put a spell on me. The spell said that I could turn into a human only if I had a true friend. Ann and Mr. Zenar and I have become very good friends this past month, " Lydia said smiling.  "I have made my decision and I have decided to… " She took a deep breath (as many others did as well)  "The Evil Island is now officially another Good Island! " And the palace rang out with cheer.

Ann came up and squeezed her hand.  "You were great! " she exclaimed.  "Friends? " she asked as she held out her hand.

"Friends, " Lydia agreed and they shook hands. At that moment, sparkles shone all around Lydia and she said the spell slowly. Finally when the sparkles disappeared, Lydia was a human! She had beautiful brown hair and looked a little older then Ann.  "The spell has broken! " Ann shrieked. Everyone in the palace was amazed and started clapping all over again.

That night was a very memorable night in the history of the Good Islands and it always will be. As for Ann and Lydia? Well, they were best friends their whole lives. And everyone else (including Ann and Lydia!) lived happily ever after!
