Genuine Carnegie Library . . . |
|
In March 1898 the mayor appointed the first people to the library board of the Cumberland
Free Library. The library was located in the city council rooms. In 1904 the library moved into the old school building. In January
1905 the Advocate had a front page article showing the letter Tom Mason had recieved from Andrew Carnegie's private secretary
stating Mr. Carnegie would gladly give $10,000.00 to erect a library if the city would maintain it and provide a suitable
site for the building. In February of 1905 the city passed an ordinance accepting the donation. In May 1905 the cornerstone of the
library was laid. In March 1906 the doors of the library were open to the public. In 1919 the library closed its doors for seven weeks
because of the influenza epidemic. In 1956 the library celebrated 50 years in the Carnegie building. In 1992 the Cumberland library was
notified from the state that it was accepted and placed on both the State (Wisconsin) and the National Register of Historic Places. It was noted for the historical significance and architecture
A plaque designating the library on the National Register of Historic Places is located in the library. In 1996 the 90th anniversary of the
Carnegie library was celebrated during National Library Week in April. Pictures of library history were displayed along with
a roster of library board members from 1898 - 1996. In 2001 the 95th anniversary of the Carnegie library will be celebrated.
